Grants for Literary Translation
The European Union's Culture Programme (2007-2013) contains a financial
strand dedicated to supporting literary translation, with the aim of
enabling the widest possible dissemination of European literature.
Grants from 2,000 to 60,000 EUR are available for publishing houses or
publishing groups for the translation of fiction in all its forms
including novels, short stories, comic strips, plays and poetry.

without borders:
Words Without
Borders (WWB) opens doors to international exchange through translation,
publication, and promotion of the world’s best writing. WWB publishes
selected prose and poetry on the web and in print anthologies (the next
one to focus on the Islamic world), stages special events that connect
foreign writers to the general public and media, develops materials for
high school teachers to use foreign literature in classrooms, and
continues to build an unparalleled online resource center for
contemporary global writing.

International!
English PEN is the founding centre of International PEN, a membership
association with 144 branches in more than one hundred countries,
providing an active and supportive community for writers and readers
around the world. PEN was founded in 1921 by Amy Dawson Scott (pictured
left, centre) in order to promote literature as a means of greater
understanding between cultures. English PEN is governed by a board of
trustees which is elected from and by the members of English PEN. The
President of English PEN is Lisa Appignanesi, and the Director is
Jonathan Heawood.

National Poetry
Competition: The
Poetry Society is Britain’s leading voice for poets and poetry. Founded
in 1909, the Society has nearly 4,000 members worldwide. The National
Poetry Competition offers a first prize of £5,000, and the deadline for
